USS Lexington
USS Lexington - Corpus Christi, Texas
CV-16: The USS LEXINGTON is an aircraft carrier of the Essex Class from World War II that has been transformed into a museum. It delights all visitors.
In World War II, a major air attack began. The attack occurred while the taskforce was being conducted off Kwajalein. Parachute flares fired by Japanese aircraft silhouetted the carrier at 23:22. Ten minutes later, a torpedo hit her starboard side and ripped out her steering wheel. Zwei people died on the fantail. Seven were in the chief Petty Officers' mess room. This was an area used for repairs during general quarters.
Four people from the damaged repair crew survived the blast because they were on a couch which apparently took the shock. The carrier was 5 feet (2m) from the stern and began to circle towards port amid dense smoke coming out of the ruptured tanks below. The damage control team was ordered to seal damaged compartments and weld them shut using heavy steel plates.

This landmark facility is not only focused on regional art; it places the region and its art within the global visual arts framework. South Texas Institute for the Arts is the umbrella organization for the museum. They are made of the exact same materials as their original counterparts. The Santa Maria and Pinta, however, are the only ones who can be toured and walked around. The Nina can be seen across the path if one looks from the CC Museum.
While I didn't know why they left, both ships were interesting. It was not what I expected, but I got a lot from the museum. You will find plenty of information about ships, sea creatures and Texas history. They are really, truly fascinating! But if you decide to go on the guided tours outside to see the ships, be prepared to get hot and sweaty! We were there in April/May. It was hot and humid. *Whew! * I can already feel it in my bones!
