History of Houston

In the early 1800s, Houston emerged as a trading center after improvements to Buffalo Bayou and the first railroad. It would be years before the city developed a more permanent identity.

Once the town had its own identity, it grew in population and began to thrive as an industrial hub for cotton, lumber, and a variety of other commodities. The discovery of oil in 1901 at Spindletop led to a dramatic expansion in the city’s economic base.

After World War II, petrochemicals became a very important industry in the city of Houston TX. These chemicals are made from natural gas or petroleum, and they remain a huge part of the city’s economy to this day.

Despite the setbacks, the city of Houston continues to grow and expand, and today, it is a sprawling metropolis that houses many successful businesses. It is also a place where people from all over the country come to live, work, and enjoy themselves.

Foods to Try

When it comes to food, Houston has an abundance of choices that are sure to please any appetite. From Tex-Mex, to Asian cuisine, to steak and pizza, there’s something for everyone in this exciting city.

Breakfast Tacos

A meal that is a staple in many Tex-Mex restaurants and food trucks, breakfast tacos are a combination of scrambled eggs, bacon, chorizo, cheese, and veggies wrapped up in a homemade flour tortilla. They’re perfect for a morning snack or light lunch and are available virtually anywhere in the city.

If you are looking for a more traditional breakfast in Houston, you can’t go wrong with a tamale, which is a mixture of corn dough and meat that’s wrapped up in a corn husk before being steamed. It’s a popular meal in the area, but you should be prepared to wait in line for it!

Religious Beliefs

If your faith is a big part of your life, you’ll likely find that Houston is a very open-minded city. It has a chapel that features more than two dozen texts from world religions, including the King James Bible, the Koran, the Torah, and the Book of Mormon.

The religious diversity of the community is reflected in the city’s population, which ranges from nearly eighty-two percent Christian to seventy-one percent Hindu and Buddhist. There is also a growing Muslim community, and the city has become one of the most multicultural cities in the nation.

Throughout the city, you’ll find plenty of religious monuments, statues, and paintings that represent different religions. A visit to the Museum of Fine Arts is a great way to experience the city’s cultural diversity.

The city is home to several major universities, including Rice University and the University of Houston, as well as a number of community colleges. The city has one of the highest percentages of residents enrolled in higher education in the United States.
