History of Austin

The first recorded settlers in the area came from Europe, most of them from Poland and the Czech Republic. After the Civil War, the region experienced a rapid expansion and the town's population increased rapidly as immigrants poured into the area. Many of the foreign-born residents were drawn to the new opportunities and wealth that were resulting from the city's emergence as the westernmost railroad terminus in Texas.

Charter Amendments and Home Rule: 1875-1912

In 1875 the state of Texas passed a special legislative charter that allowed for the enactment of home rule in cities. Up until this time, the state legislature had been responsible for governing local governments.

Commission Government: 1909-1926

After the 1875 legislative charter change, the citizens of Austin continued to push for further changes in the city's governing form. The citizens ultimately approved a charter in 1909 that changed the city's governing style from Mayor Alderman to Commission style. In this form of government the city's citizens opted to replace their elected alderman with a group of commissioners, each of which was voted in by the citizens of the entire city.

During the next decade, the city grew and expanded as it developed its infrastructure and business base. As a result of these changes, the city became an important trading center for a large part of central Texas.

Austin’s growth also triggered the establishment of a number of large corporations. These corporations brought jobs to the city, boosting the economy and contributing to the influx of new settlers.

These new companies led to the development of a new industry in Austin: technology. Today, the city is home to a variety of high-tech companies such as 3M, Advanced Micro Devices, Apple, Cisco, Dell, eBay, Google, IBM, Intel, and Texas Instruments.

Companies based in Austin are a diverse mix of national and global businesses. They are supported by an active community, many of which are dedicated to preserving the environment and supporting their neighbors.

The city's cosmopolitan character has also contributed to its growth and success. It has a diverse population, with an estimated 35 percent of the population identifying as racial minorities. The city has a large African-American community, and a strong Latino population.

Politically, the city has been considered a liberal center in a conservative state. As a result, the city generally votes for Democrats.

The city's growth and diversity has helped it to become a major center for business, technology, and culture. It is also a center for entrepreneurship, with many small businesses emerging in the city. The booming economy has attracted many high-tech companies to the Austin area, including Dell and the headquarters of several Fortune 500 companies.
