The history of Houston begins in 1836, when brothers John Kirby Allen and Augustus Chapman Allen purchased 6,600 acres on the banks of Buffalo Bayou for the purpose of founding a town. They named the new town after Sam Houston, who was elected president of Texas in September 1836 and was instrumental in Texas’ victory over Mexico at the Battle of San Jacinto.

As a trading post, Houston quickly grew in size and prominence. The city’s rich natural resources, especially petroleum, oil, lime, sulfur, and salt, helped the area become a center of business and industry, as well as a transport hub.

During World War II, Houston became a major shipbuilding and manufacturing center. As a result, it was named a major industrial city by the United States government in 1943.

Today, Houston’s economy is based on oil and gas, aerospace, technology, healthcare, and medical research. It has one of the country’s most diversified economies and is a leading hub for international commerce.

The population of Houston is growing rapidly, with a recent study estimating that there will be over 500,000 people in the area by 2025. The city is known as a great place to live, with many job opportunities and affordable real estate.

A number of colleges and universities in the area offer excellent educational programs. Among them are Rice University, The University of Houston, Texas Southern University, the University of St. Thomas, and several campuses of Houston Community College.

Houston has a vibrant arts scene, with many theatres and music venues. Among the most famous are the Houston Ballet, the Houston Grand Opera, and The Alley Theater.

Another important artistic institution is the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, which has a collection of more than 13,000 works in its various galleries and exhibits. A significant focus of the art museum’s work is contemporary art, and its collections include pieces by Mark Rothko, Francis Bacon, David Hockney, Richard Serra, and Robert Gober.

There are also a number of museums dedicated to art and history, including the Museum of African American Culture, The Menil Collection, and the Contemporary Art Museum of Houston.

In addition to museums, there are a number of other cultural attractions throughout the city. These include the Space Center Houston at the Johnson Space Center, numerous local parks, and several lakes and wildlife refuges in the area.

The city has a large Hispanic population, with more than 2 million residents. In addition, the city has a significant African-American population.

This has contributed to a diverse food scene in the city, which has been featured on the James Beard Award semifinalist list for 11 years running. Moreover, Houston is home to the world’s largest concentration of medical facilities, with Texas Medical Center being among the most prominent.
